Williams begins an <br /> impromptu routine for the troops, then asks a number <br /> of them where they're from, wryly commenting on each <br /> one's point of origin in classic and frenetic Robin <br />Wilfiams fashion. <br />One soldier reports that he's from Cleveland, to which <br />Robin Williams replies, and I'm paraphrasing, *'Viemam <br />must not be much of a change for you..." <br />To man), people outside of Ohio, this .joke, and more <br />like it, personify the city of Cleveland. They would be sur- <br />prised to find that Cleveland Metroparks, encompassing <br />more than 20,000 acres and five counties outside of ~. <br />Cleveland, is one of the finest natural parks in the nation. <br /> <br />Vast Array <br /> The entit'e Cleveland Metroparks system - which <br />includes such cliverse entities as the Cleveland Zoo, sports <br />fields and golf courses, among Others - employs more than <br />500 full-time people. Park operations, a department within <br /> <br />'~ PAt~KS&FIEC BUSINESS I Augusl 2002 I www. parksandrecbusiness.com <br /> <br />Cleveland Metroparks charged with managing and maintatn- <br />ing the systemk public parks, has a full-time staff of 181, <br />with about 40 part-time employees and about 200 seasonal <br />employees. The park is divided into. 13 sections, or reserva- <br />tions as they're called, each led by a park manager. <br /> Within park operations is a natural landscape specialist, <br />an outdoor education program, an Institute of the Great <br />Outdoors, a Youth Outdoors program, an aquatics program, <br />a winter recreational facilit3; safety and environmental man- <br />agement, fleet management and others. <br /> <br /> <br />
