This class has produced many interesting and high quality analyses of
community/natural resources opportunities in the past, and I'm certain that this year will be the
best yet. To reintroduce you to this course and what will result from it, I'll refer to a quote in the
course syllabus: "Each year students in NRES 4195 ~vork wSth a client to perform 'real world'
projects involving land or resource inventory, planning, and use. Students work in groups of
about five people. The group's goal is to gather data relevant to the client's needs, analyze the
data, and, based on the data, make recommendations for future use. Students produce a final
written report for the client, develop a formal presentation describing their findings, and present
their findings to the client group."

I wanted to remind you of the first, general meeting with the students (20) and faculty with you
and the other professionals involved with this project. The meeting will be held at the new Anoka
Co. Library on Co. Rd. t 16 (across from the high school) on September 6, at 3:30 p.m. This will
b6 the first opportunity for the students to conduct a "needs assessment," from your perspective.
it will be important for them to hear your views, your ideas, and your goals if this project is to be
successful. Two of the groups will be working on a "Grand Round" trail system within Anoka,
with connections to Ramsey, Coon Rapids and Andover trail systems. Two groups will be
recommending options for the treatment and/or conservation of the open space that the new
library is part of.

This first meeting is critical for starting the groups off in the right direction. A one to one and a
half-hour time commitment on your and our part should be sufficient at this point. It will also be
an opportunity for everyone to put faces to names. By September 6, each group will have
appointed a group leader, which will be the person that will contact you at various times
throughout the semester for additional input.

I have included a list of the professional contacts that will have varying degrees of involvement
with the projects this semester, the faculty involved and the surnames of the students. We are alt
looking for~vard to meeting with you on the 6th and working with you this semester. Please feet
free to contact me if you have any further concerns or questions.

-140-

Respectt~l~ yours,,,--~ i

Gary R.
