COMMISSION BUSINESS

Case #1: Ramsey Business Newsletter

At the September meeting of the EDC, it was decided that this subject (Ramsey Business
Newsletter) be tabled for discussion in October. Based on this directive, Mr. Gromberg created a
mock newsletter. The newsletter would be directed toward local businesses. Based on the list that
the City used for the recent business events, the postage would cost $45.69 per edition. The
printing costs would be determined by the type of paper and folding requirements. It is Mr.
Gromberg's suggestion to use the 11" x 17" size, folded in half and then rtl-folded.

Upon request, Mr. Gromberg provided an example of a newsletter that was bi-folded. He
suggested the tri-fold to allow the newsletter to be placed in a business sized envelope for
additional distribution.

Chairperson Wagner posed the question of what the EDC intends to accomplish with the
newsletter. Do we want it to provide information about different programs, educate the business
owners or act as a promotional piece for the City, etc.

Commissioner Nelson agreed and suggested that it may be able to accomplish a wide variety of
goals. In addition, we should add a list of Commissioners and phone numbers so that if a
business owner has a question, they would contact the Commissioner or City Staff to fred the right
information.

Commissioner Kent interjected that his firm distributes a quarterly newsletter that has a specific
topic such as tax planning or capital improvements. The aim of the newsletter is to inform.

Commissioner Nelson suggested that if any of the EDC members has ideas or information to
contribute, forward it to Mr. Gromberg for inclusion in the newsletter.

Commissioner Stafki inquired as to whether the newsletter would have advertising and, if so, to
limit it to business/customer oriented advertisements.

Commissioner Nelson asked who would have editorial review relative to advertising.

After a brief discussion, it was the consensus of the EDC that the City Administrator and Economic
Development Coordinator would act as the editors.

Chairperson Wagner asked if the EDC would see the document prior to its distribution and the
anticipated delivery date of the fa'st issue.

Mr. Gromberg suggested a target date of December 1, 1995, for mailing. The general feeling
would be to have the EDC review the articles at their meeting prior to the mailing of the newsletter.
In the case of the fa'st issue, the articles would be reviewed at the November meeting of the EDC.
If any new articles come about between the Commission's review and printing, they could be
added with the approval of the editors.

Motion by Commissioner Kent and seconded by Commissioner Nelson to direct staff to present
the recommendation to City Council to start a business newsletter.

Motion carded. Voting Yes: Chairperson Wagner, Commissioners Nelson, Kent, and Stafld,
Voting No: None. Absent: Commissioners McGhee and Ullen.

Economic Development Commission/October 2, 1995
Page 2 of 3
