COMMISSION BUSINESS

Case #1:

Skate Park Planning - Discuss Request for Pnl,posals and Specifications

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood indicated this discussion refers to the proposed skate park
proposal and RFP.

Slides were presented by ParklUtilities Supervisor Riverblood and he reviewed the steps already
taken by the Commission and staff to move the skate park forward.

Chairperson Johns stated she attended the Happy Days event and the kids had a blast. She
thought it was really well done and many people stopped by. All of the kids were excited and
wanted to get on the list be a part of the planning process.

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood also showed a video of the Happy Days Skate Event.

Chairperson Johns stated it was nice to see all the different age groups participating together.
She thought it was very positive.

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood pointed out the items Ramsey purchased on the video. He
stated they need to either have the equipment boxed tightly or left open because litter is a real
concern at the skate parks.

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood stated while this is a 2008 projected project in the Capital
Improvement Program, it is not approved or received by the City Council yet. They want to zero
in on what it would look like and what the City can get for the dollars requested before going to
the City Council.

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood reviewed the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board
request for proposal with the Commission.

Chairperson Johns thought the consensus of the Commission was to purchase concrete
equipment.

ParkslUtilities Supervisor Riverblood thought it was key to understand where the Commission
felt the youth fit into this. He stated they could send out a preliminary RFP to vendors.

Chairperson Johns thought that was the best model for that. She also did not want to bring the
youth into the process too soon because there will be an expectation to have it done right away.
She wants to make sure the funds are approved before they go too far. She thought there was a
huge base of support for this type of park.

Commissioner Erickson asked if this was going to be brought forward in spring 2008, would it
be too optimistic to think it could be ready by the late spring/early summer 2008.

Park and Recreation Commission/October 11, 2007
Page 2 of 3
