COMMISSION BUSINESS <br /> <br />Case gl: Interview Candidates for the Economic Development Commission. <br /> <br />Chairperson Wagner welcomed the prospective members to the meeting and informed them that the <br />Commission generally meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. This meeting <br />schedule is adjustable, as shown by tonight's meeting, to facilitate the Commission members' <br />attendance. The EDC has no formal power, but acts as an advisory Commission to the City <br />Council on issues related to the economic well being of the community. The City Council may or <br />may not decide to act upon those recommendations, but it is the role of the EDC to provide the <br />recommendations. The EDC is also in charge of planning and conducting the Annual Business <br />Appreciation Day and the Business Expo. Mr. Wagner further informed the candidates that local <br />government changes very slowly and that it can be very frustrating. This is especially mae when <br />the slowness is coupled with a lack of recognition for the involvement that the EDC may have <br />provided. With this in mind, the candidates were interviewed. <br /> <br />Dick Kimbler provided the following comments in his desire to serve on the EDC and the <br />advantages he could provide. <br /> <br />Currently running for the IR endorsement for Secretary of State. <br />Formerly owned and operated a farm in the City of Ramsey. <br />Has started a number of businesses and has been self-employed for quite some time. <br />Wants to become involved in the community to help protect both the current residents from <br />unduly large tax increases and the existing businesses to help promote their growth. <br />Wants ~to help attract new businesses as long as they do not adversely affect the residents or <br />existing businesses. <br />Would like to help manage the City's growth for the best possible outcome. <br />Feels the City of Ramsey is currently similar to Fridley when they were going through their <br />high growth period. <br /> <br />The EDC conducted a brief discussion with Mr. Kimbler concerning his views and the EDC's <br />questions about those views. <br /> <br />Tom Kurak provided the following comments in his desire to serve on the EDC and the advantages <br />he could provide. <br /> <br />He has been on the EDC before, but left as he became frustrated at the direction the City <br />was heading and felt that he had no new ideas to provide. <br />He feols the EDC does accomplish a lot by giving insight to businesses on how the City <br />operates. <br />Mr. Kurak wants to be involved with blending the resident's concerns with the needs of the <br />business community. <br />Mr. Kurak then briefly described his ownership of the Auto Ranch and pawn shop. <br />He felt that he is overall a positive person and that he tries to find solutions to problems. <br /> <br />The EDC conducted a brief discussion with Mr. Kurak concerning his views and the EDC's <br />questions about those views. <br /> <br />Sam McGhee provided the following comments in his desire to serve on the EDC and the <br />advantages he could provide. <br /> <br />Has lived in Ramsey for 2 1/2 years. <br /> <br />Economic Development Commission / May 12, 1994 <br /> Page 2 of 4 <br /> <br /> <br />
