III. Components of the Design

While the lay of the land and the existing natural elements like the wetland and restored Prairie
are the armature for the design, the curriculum of Ramsey Elementary's ELA is translated into
the specific components of the garden.

The City of Ramsey' s Comprehensive Plan of 2001 emphasizes providing paved'trails or
sidewalks along all collector stz. eets so that people can move between, neighborhoods and access
the parks and other community facilities. The first step in the overall layout of the Discovery
Garden was to determine how it should connect to the existing bike path and Alpine Park. The
attached Master Plan Layout shows the proposed bike path connections and also components
inspired-by the Ramsey ELA.

Examples of past art by various artists are provided to illustrate ideas for unique works of public
art that could be created especially for the Discovery Garden. A broad menu of opportunities
and alternatives are presented.

1. Greeaway Connection and Hiking Loop continue the bike path through the garden and into
the park .:

· Banners announce the approach to the park (Fig. 1)

· Pavement leading to the playground has inset into it a board game about recycling and the
cycles of nature; or animal tracks; or other nature patterns (Fig. 2) or

· Fantastic sculpture constructed entirely of recycled materials greets visitors (Fig. 3)

· Hiking Loop proceeds through Listening Grove of Quaking Aspen

2. Overlook provides a place to rest along the bike path and examine and enjoy the landscape

· Seating area of natural materials; reused and recycled wood and stone (Fig. 3) surrounded
by revegetafion including native wetland plantings on the ELA Plant List

3. Play Area includes playground equipment and sandbox

· Playset blends into the landscape; includes imagery of focus organisms (Fig. 4)
· Sandbox around playset has hidden treasures (Fig. 5)

· Railing around play area depicts focus organisms or landscape sections (Fig. 6)

DRAFT Diseovepf Garden Concept Phase, Regina Flanagan, April ~2, 2003

4
-531-
