.

~

CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
Topic Report: MN Naturalists Program
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor

Background:

The purpose of this topic report is to highlight the existing volunteer program within Ramsey
Parks; and discuss potential expansion to engage more adult volunteers. Staff proposes
partnering with the University of Minnesota on a fairly new and successful endeavor they
developed with the Department of Natural Resources called the, Minnesota' Master Naturalist
program.

Staff believes that this program can greatly enhance volunteerism and, in doing so, accelerate
certain park improvements while saving valuable dollars, as well as reducing some of the
demand on paid staff. In addition, a formalized program can also develop a pool of residents to
provide volunteer contributions for programming like the Environmental Expo. Additional
. info'rmation will be available at the meeting.

.

Action Statement:

Based upon discussion

Reviewed by:

Parks Supervisor
Director of Public W orks/Principal C'
Environmental COOl1 .
City Administrator

CCWS:

11/27/2007
