CASE # l

CONSIDER PURCHASE OF A SEWER JET V AC TRUCK
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer and
John Nelson, Utility Supervisor

Background:

The City Council met in work session on February 12, 2008 to discuss the purchase of a j etter
vac truck which would be used to clean the cities 48 miles of sanitary sewer on a regular basis
as recommended by the Minnesota League of Municipalities, the City's insurer. A copy ofthe
attached Work Study Topic report from that session is attached since in contains the
justification and economics supporting the purchase of this piece of equipment.

It was noted subsequent to the work session that the quotations supplied did not include any
applicable taxes. Since City purchases are subject to Minnesota sales tax which is 6.5%, the
purchase numbers contained need to be revised accordingly. It was also suggested at the
workshop that since storm sewer cleaning with this piece of equipment would be only an
ancillary use that all funding for this piece of equipment should come from the Sanitary Sewer
Utility.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends that Council authorize the purchase of a jet vac truck complete with television
equipment in an amount not to exceed $351,450 with fimding to be from the Sanitary Sewer Utility.

Action:

Motion to authorize the purchase of a jet vac truck complete with television equipment in an
amount not to exceed $351,450 with fimding to be from the Sanitary Sewer Utility.

R~viewe~~y: 1-<6: ~ 0
City Administrator
Director of Public W orks/Principal City Engineer
Finance Officer

SpecCC:

02/19/08
