<br />2. Have open policy discussions to enhance understandings among individuals regarding <br />their strategic direction, including a strengths and weakness assessment. <br />3. Review mission and vision for the city. <br />4. Establish priorities (what is most important) for next 1-3 years. <br />5. Refresh understanding of roles and responsibilities for council, staff and mayor. <br />6. Identify ways to improve communication within council and between council and staff. <br /> <br />Expectations and Legacy <br /> <br />Council and staff conducted a top-of-mind exercise answering the following questions presented <br />by Ms. Strandell: <br /> <br />What community or city would you not want to emulate and why? <br />Answers given were: Woodbury, Brooklyn Park, Dayton, Minneapolis, Albert Lea, Brooklyn <br />Center, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Ham Lake. <br /> <br />Negative aspects of the above cities: sprawling development; seas of parking lots and <br />townhomes; too much high density development coupled with low end commercial <br />development; crime issues; poor transportation; all residential; too heavy and dense; nothing to <br />attract all kinds of families; no ability to live, work and play; declining commercial/residential <br />properties; old, run down, and boxed in; rat race; no central core of activity; poor planning for <br />the future; too much multi-family and apartments. <br /> <br />What city would you like to take some good things from and what would those things be? <br />Answers given were: Plymouth, Maple Grove, Oakdale, Open Land, Downtown Buffalo, <br />Wayzata, Woodbury and Red Wing. <br /> <br />Positive aspects of the above cities: many neighborhoods that matured well; great public park <br />system; family oriented; creation of destination city that people enjoy; thriving commercial; great <br />destination; diverse housing; open land with the ability to do anything. <br /> <br />Council and staff stated topics they would like to be discussed during the Council/Staff Retreat. <br />Council members also provided information on how they would like their legacy to be reflected <br />during their time serving on the City Council. <br /> <br />'07 and The Vision Thing <br /> <br />Ms. Strandell reviewed the following goals established in the City of Ramsey 2007 Strategic <br />Planning/Goal Setting Workshop: .' <br /> <br />Goal No.1: Complete build-out of Ramsey Town Center's residential and commercial <br />components in a manner that generates tax revenues in excess of debt service <br />requirements for infrastructure. <br />Goal No.2: Create and protect an interconnected system of athletic areas, parks, trails, and <br />green spaces throughout the city. <br />Goal No.3: Complete and Implement 2008 Comprehensive Plan Update. <br /> <br />City Council/Staff Strategic Planning Session / February 1, 2008 <br />Page 2 of 10 <br />
