<br />installation included three mailboxes. Staff informed the resident of the City's current policy <br />and offered that the matter would be brought to the Public Works Committee for review. Staffis <br />asking for direction on whether the Committee feels the policy should be changed so that the <br />amount is increased when there are multiple mailboxes involved. Mr. Riemer suggested 25% of <br />the $75 for up to four boxes which would make the expended amount $150 maximum. <br /> <br />Discussion ensued regarding the cost of posts, cost of digging, and cost of the mailboxes <br />themselves. It was noted that the resident has the option of taking care of the labor or having the <br />City do it. <br /> <br />Kelly Adamek, 15241 Jackal Street, reported that the entire bottoms of the mailboxes were <br />scraped so it was more damage than what the pictures project. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec clarified that Mr. Reimer's suggestion is that if a resident wants to take care of the <br />repairs themselves, the money the City would contribute would be 25% for each additional <br />mailbox. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works Olson stated that the first $75 covers the post and the mail box. Maybe <br />it would be easier to change the policy to reflect $75 plus $25 for each additional mailbox when <br />the structure is multiple mailboxes. <br /> <br />Councilmember Olson expressed agreement with the $75 plus $25 for each additional mailbox. <br /> <br />Streets Supervisor Riemer reported that there are up to six or eight boxes together by townhome <br />developments. <br /> <br />Chairperson Dehen inquired what the frequency of damage to mailboxes is. <br /> <br />Mr. Riemer responded five to 10 per year. He added that this is the first time the City has <br />damaged a multiple mailbox structure. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated it would be an easy formula to say $75 plus $25 for each box up to $200 on <br />these multiple mailboxes. <br /> <br />Mr. Riemer stated that he spoke with staff at the City of Eagan and was informed that they send <br />letters to people in the summer whose mailboxes look like they will not make it through the <br />winter, letting them know that the City will not replace the mailbox if the homeowner doesn't fix <br />or replace his mailbox. He felt that was something Ramsey could look at doing later. Upon <br />request, Mr. Riemer summarized the process when a call comes through reporting that a mailbox <br />was downed by a snowplow. <br /> <br />Motion by Mayor Gamec and seconded by Commissioner Olson to amend the mailbox <br />replacement policy as follows: $75 for one mailbox with an additional $25 for each box on a <br />multiple structure - up to $200. <br /> <br />Public Works Committee - February 19, 2008 <br />Page 2 of9 <br />
