<br />I <br /> <br />MISSISSIPPI <br />RIVER <br /> <br />Friends of the Mississippi River <br /> <br />360 North Robert Street,Suite400 - Saint PauUvlN 55101- 651/222-2193 - Fax 651/222-6005 <br /> <br />Workin to roteet the Mississi i River and its watershed in the Twin Cities Area. <br /> <br />Dear Community Leader, <br /> <br />Friends of the Mississippi River has teamed up with the National Park Service staff to develop and <br />present a customized workshop for local decision-makers and planners in your community: <br /> <br />A National Park Runs Through It- The Mississippi River in Ramsey <br />Tuesday, June 17 · 7:30-9:30 p.m. <br />Ramsey City Hall, Alexander Ramsey Room <br />7550 Sunwood Dr NW <br /> <br />The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) was established as a National Park by <br />Congress twenty years ago in order to protect the river's unique natural, cultural and scenic resources <br />in the Twin Cities. Yet many river corridor communities still struggle with how to successfully manage <br />a resource of national and regional, as well as local, significance. <br /> <br />The focus of the workshop is to provide an image-rich overview of the unique resources and variable <br />character of the MNRRA Corridor, a detailed look at the stretch of river corridor within the City of <br />Ramsey, and a group discussion about the role of local government, management tools, technical <br />assistance and other available resources. <br /> <br />What you will learn about and discuss: <br />. Why did Congress seiect this 72-mile stretch of River from Dayton to Hastings as the only <br />National Park on the entire 2,311-mile length of the Mississippi? <br />· What makes the river unique and special in each corridor community? <br />· What significant natural and cultural resources exist in the river corridor in Ramsey? <br />· What kind of development is anticipated or planned for the corridor in Ramsey? <br />· What opportunities. exist to protect open space in the conidor in Ramsey? <br />· What are the economic benefits andlor implications of having a National Park run through the <br />community? <br />.
