Trl<
TRUST
f~
PUBLJ C
LAND
m;:;.m RAMSEY CITY MINNESOTA
lli'fH..w.... ,

Feasibility Study

water improvemeflts expensed in 2006 but to be collected in assessments over the next ten
12
years.

Parks and Conservation

The City of Ramsey's Parks system consists of approximately 43 parks, 17 of which include
active recreation equipment or areas. These parks amount to approximately 565 acres of
park and trail corridors; much of it still in its natural state. In 2006 Parks and Utilities
operations saw a formal separation of duties so that each department could continue to
evolve and allow for needed specialization of both disciplines.13

The City of Ramsey is fortunate to be known for its natural resources and as of 2005 the
Metropolitan Council reported that there were 2,430 acres in parks, recreation, and
preserves. More than half of the City's borders are on the Rum and Mississippi Rivers, and
over 15 percent of its area protected wedands. Planning, development, and maintenance of
the City's public lands are entrusted to the parks department. Ramsey's parks offer an
assortment of recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, and canoeing. Services
performed by the department include landscaping, mowing, planting, athletic field
maintenance, construction of new or maintenance of existing parks, and enhancement and
restoration of natural resources. More than 20,000 staff hours are invested in the park and
trail system maintenance each year, with 10,000 of these hours contributed by high school
and college students in the summer.14

In May 2007 Ramsey residents were asked what were the top five best things about Ramsey.
The "natural environment" was firstwith thirty two percent, followed by "the
people/ community" at twenty one percent.15

Flarn:s.ey To.!) 5 Po~l
il5%

~ 513fGl

Ii NatlJCa!
