CASE # 1

PURPLE MARTIN PROJECT AT EMERALD POND PARK
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor

Background:

As the Commission may recall, park's staff and neighbor to Emerald Pond Park, Hauns
Froehlingsdorf collaborated last spring to establish a Purple Martin colony within the park.
Hauns and his family have invested 100' s of hours in this endeavor and will be available at
the meeting to present to the Commission the interesting, and sometimes troubling
(vandalism) account of this project. This overall successful story does include two pairs of
nesting martins this summer - and how Hauns is utilizing geocashing to deter mischievous
behavior in the park.

Observations:

More information is available at the Minnesota Martin web site; and under 'landlord
profiles', where Hauns' project at Emerald Pond Park is featured.
http://www.mnmartin.org/froehlingsdorf.cfin Attached are two images from the site.

Commission Action:

No action required - informational only.

Reviewed by:
Director of Public Works/Principal City Engineer
Civil Engineer II

P&R: 07110/08
