<br />CAS.E # b <br /> <br />PERIODIC INSPECTION OF PARKING RAMP <br />By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />The Ramsey Town Center parking ramp was constructed in 2008 and is a part of the City's <br />public works infrastructure which must be maintained to insure public safety. Staff has <br />researched the requirements for the periodic inspection of similar structures in other communities <br />and the building industry. The purpose ofthis case is to present to Council a schedule for the <br />periodic inspection for this and similar future structures within the City and also identify budget <br />resources that will be required in implementing these inspections. <br /> <br />There are three levels of inspection associated with parking ramps as defined below: <br /> <br />. Type I Structural Condition Survey includes the visual observation of all structural <br />components including but not limited to, the top and bottom of all structural floors, <br />helixes, and all supporting beams, columns and walls. <br />. Type II Structural Condition Survey includes visual observations plus nondestructive test <br />such as, but not limited to, chloride ion concentration tests, concrete relative compression <br />strength tests, half cell testing, pachometer reading, tapping, chaining, and dragging. <br />. Type III Structural Condition Survey includes visual observations and nondestructive <br />tests plus destructive testing, such as but not limited to, the physical removal of concrete <br />for the purpose of exposing reinforcing steel, prestressing or post tensioning anchors, (to <br />document the amount of cortosion at the grippers, in the strand, and on the lmstressed <br />face of the anchor), expansion or contraction joints, or any other buried steel. Concrete <br />cores samples might be used to document compressive strengths. <br /> <br />The schedule for performing the above tests should be considered as follows; <br /> <br />. No structural condition survey is required for five (5) years following construction. <br />. A Type I Structural Survey should be performed in the sixth year (2012). <br />. A Type I Structural Survey should be performed in the seventh year (2013) <br />. A Type III Structural Survey should be performed in the seventh year (2014), however a <br />Type II Structural Survey may be substituted for a Type III when judged appropriate by <br />the reviewing structural engineer. The engineer's recommendation in this case should be <br />substantiated with written documentation.' <br /> <br />59 <br />
