CASE # ~

COMMUNITY CENTER FOCUS GROUP PROCESS AND STATUS
CASE OF THE CITY OF RAMSEY
By: Tim GhldhiU, Associate Planner

Background:

. At the April 22, 2008 City Council Work Session, Cotmcil directed staff to host a series of focus groups
related to the potential construction of a community center in the city of Ramsey. Seven focus groups
were held over the summer and have now been completed.

Attachments:

1) Focus Group Packet
2) Results of Focus Groups
3) City Council Work Session Topic Report datedApri122, 2008

.Findings:

The pU!pose of the focus groups were to have an open dialogue on potential facilities and services could
be included in a cOlnmunity center, as well as how stlch a facility should be funded. Participants were
then. asked to rank the results of this brainstorming session. The- results of the focus group sessions are
attached for your review.

Staff ,is seeking feedback from the Parks and Recreation regarding the following:

. If the City of Ramsey were to pursue the construction of a Community Center, what types of
facilities would you anticipate having a need or desire to utilize?
. What types of ancillary services do you think you would patronize if available in-a community
center?
. How do you think a facility like this should be financed?
. What other community priorities do you feel are important besides a community center?
. If there is more detail you can offer about your potential use of a community center facility,
please provide the information.

The next step is proposed to be a Community Center Task Force to serve as an a.dvisory board to the City
Council during the potential planning stages. The City could engage the services of a consultant or
architect to take the results of the focus group sessions and equate those results into square footage
requirements and initial costs of construction. To date, no funding has been identified for a
consultant/architect to ~ork with the initial design and planning stages nor for funding of the community'
center itself. The results of the focus group stage will be forwarded to City Council to discuss whether or
not City Council is interested in forming a task force.

11
