Access to fresh fruit and
vegetables allows residents to
make healthy food choices.
Curral1tly,acceas to stores that
sell these items is $omewhat
limited In Ramsey .

Food

HIA THRESHOLD

The primary Indicator for this subject araa Is that all rasldential areas are within
1,600 meters of supermarkets where fruits and vegetables are sold.

CURRENT ACHIEVEMENT

(TOTAL POINTS=O)

Currently, there are two (2) grocery stores that carry fresh fruit and vegetables
in the City of Ramsey. Unfortunately, only 6.8% of parcels are within a 1,600-
meter buffer of these stores (See Figure #5).

However, the area within these buffers includes much undeveloped land that Is
zoned for medium, high density or town center residential housing. In addition
to the 2,000+ units planned for Town Center, the southern 1,600 meter buffer
area Inel\.lcles 11.5 acres of undeveloped land that Is zoned for medium or high
density housing and 30 Beres of lilnglefiilmlly housing. Over the next 10 to 20
years; this can iilccommodate up to 900 addItional hOl..lsfng units, for a total of
2,900 housing units to be added to the buffer area. This will morl! than double
the amount of residential housing within 1 mile of a grQcery store. However, by
2030, the City Is expected to have 16,500 households, and l\lssumlng the
addition of no new grocery stores, the percentage of households within the
buffer will remain near 6.8 percent.

RAMSEY'S GOAL

Through implementation of the following policies, Ramsey hopes to ensure that
50% of 'the residential units in the City are within 1,600 meters of a
supermarket or fruit and vegetable shop.

POLICY DIRECTIONS

As previol, lsly described, bElcalJse the City's total population will continue to
Increase as undeveloped land within the current supermarket buffers becomes
developed, the overall plilreentage of residential units will continue to remain
relatively constant near 7 percent, Assuming this population growth, the only
effective method of increasing the number of units within the buffer Is to
increase the number of supermarkets or fruit and vegetable shops In Ramsey.

Ramsey could be closer to its goal If at least one more'large food retail store
were located In the city, preferably In the southeastern portion of the City.

12

-114-
