She stated she was pleased to see how <br />residents were interested in involving a number of different entities in the project. <br /> <br />Parks Supervisor Riverblood stated with respect to the organized athletic groups, it will be <br />important to obtain a commitment from them relative to use of the facilities. He added these <br />groups would be approached to use the facilities at a pre-established rate. <br /> <br />Commissioner Barr commented that she has experienced difficulty obtaining gym time and field <br />time and felt that the Community Center would not have any difficulty filling gym time slots. <br /> <br />Commissioner Backous concurred and stated it will be important to make sure that time is set <br />aside for open gym time at the Community Center. <br /> <br />Commissioner Barr suggested designing a Community Center that could be easily expanded in <br />the future. <br /> <br />Commissioner Shryock concurred and stated the facility could be built, for example, without a <br />pool initially because of the extremely high cost of maintaining a pool. <br /> <br />Chairperson Johns stated she felt the facility should definitely include an exercise facility and <br />meeting rooms; if the community decides it wants a pool, then that could be added through a <br />referendum. <br /> <br />Commissioner LaMere stated several years ago, a Community Center Task Force was established <br />and it would be interesting to review the results of their work. <br /> <br />Parks Supervisor Riverblood agreed to determine if the survey results of the previous task force <br />are available. He added it would also be helpful to see what other communities have done, as <br />well as what these communities listed as their priorities and how they financed their community <br />centers. <br /> <br />Commissioner Shryock suggested staff make every effort to get representatives from every group <br />involved in the process. <br /> <br />Commissioner Backous stated the City needs an indoor sports facility and consideration should <br />be given as to whether this type of facility is included in the community center project. <br /> <br />Commissioner Shryock concurred and stated this would be a key attraction for the City. <br /> <br />Parks Supervisor Riverblood stated staff is meeting tomorrow to review the 2009-2013 Capital <br />Improvement Program and asked if the Park and Recreation Commission has consensus to <br />include a placeholder in the CIP for an indoor dome facility if the community center is not going <br />to move forward in some time certain. <br /> <br />Park and Recreation Commission/September 11, 2008 <br />Page 6 of 10 <br />
