CONSIDER USE OF CITY OWNED RALF PROPERTY FOR AHSD COMMUNITY
EDUCATION FITNESS CLASSES
By: Heidi A. Nelson, Asst. City Administrator
Background:
Staff has been contacted by Anoka Hennepin School District Community Education staff
regarding utilizing the westerly office space at the former NAU Building that was purchased by
the City with RALF funds. As Council will recall, Youth First utilizes the easterly office space
to provide after - school and community programming. The City provides that space at no cost to
Youth First. Youth First pays utilities and maintains the space.
AHSD Community Education proposes to use the space on the following dates /times for
the winter months:
Monday:
10:00- 11:OOam Circuit Challenge with. Sherri Hart
*Winter. Circuit Challenge Jan 5 -March 23 =9 sessions (No Class 1/19, 2/16, & 3/2)
Tuesday:
11:45am- 12:25pm Midday Yoga Recharge with Laura Irwin- Schack
*Winter Midday Yoga Recharge Jan 6 -March 24 =10 sessions (No Class 2/10 & 3/3)
Wednesday:
11:45am- 12:25pm Midday Yoga with Jennifer Lee
*Winter Midday Yoga Jan 7 -March 25 =11 sessions (No Class 3/4)
Thursday:
11:45am- 12:25pm Midday Yoga Flow with Lori Torkkola
*Winter Midday Yoga Flow Jan 8 -March 26 =11 sessions (No Class 3/5)
In summary, the use of the space would be four days a week totaling three — four hours for 11
weeks. At this time, Community Education has expressed an interest in the space only for
exercise classes; they do not have an office space need. It is anticipated that they would continue
to schedule classes in the space for future seasonal sessions. Community Education proposes to
lease the space at no cost and pay for the utilities and maintenance in order to keep the class fee
down for participants.
Staff has discussed with Community Education that if a market rate tenant were to become
available, the City would provide them 30 days notice to vacate the use of the property.
Currently, there are no market rate tenants interested in the property. This is consistent with the
current market for lease space in the Highway 10 Corridor; in short, the market is very slow for
lease commercial space. Currently, they are hosting a couple of classes from the east side of
the office space leased by Youth First and if they had to leave during the time of a class offering,
they would move the class back to the east side.
