<br />Councilmember Elvig stated that the only problem he has is that it seems to him that when he <br />drives by he doesn't pay attention to the signs because there is so much going on right there. He <br />stated that perhaps the City could talk to the applicant about losing some of the other signage out <br />there. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Miller stated that she thinks the temporarY'signs are out there <br />because there is not room on the sign for all the tenants. <br /> <br />Councilmember Dehen stated that he thinks the temporary signs seem to have turned into a <br />summer long business rather than just a two-week length oftime. <br /> <br />City Administrator Ulrich stated that the Council did amend the ordinance for transient <br />merchants to only be able to stay 30 days, but that doesn't start until 2009. <br /> <br />Councilmember Jeffrey stated that at the EDA meeting, there was discussion about the <br />temporary signs and that if this overage was approved, the City may restrict the temporary signs <br />that are out there. He stated that he would encourage the businesses to utilize this new sign and <br />the reader board and less of the temporary signs. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that he feels the Council could put a condition on the variance that <br />the temporary signs are reduced or eliminated. . <br /> <br />Councilmember Jeffrey stated that it will be at the building owner's discretion of what can go on <br />the reader board and asked who applies for the temporary signs. <br /> <br />Councilmember Dehen stated that it seems to him that, similar to political signs, the owner of the <br />property has to approve of the signs, so he doesn't see it as a tenant issue, but a property owner <br />issue. . <br /> <br />City Attomey Goodrich stated that this is correct and the signs go with the property owner. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen stated that the problem is that these signs haven't been temporary, <br />but permanent. She stated that she doesn't think it is completely unreasonable to allow for truly <br />temporary signs that can advertise a special event. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig asked if there was any language that could be included that would define <br />temporary signs. <br /> <br />City Attomey Goodrich stated that he thinks there are provisions in the sign ordinance for <br />temporary signs and asked that this be tabled for a bit to aJlow him time to review this. <br /> <br />Acting Mayor Elvig stated that the Council would postpone this Case until later on the agenda. <br /> <br />City Council October 28, 2008 <br />Page 90f 20 <br /> <br />P27 <br />
