Mr. Olson replied on a day -to -day basis — no. However, he felt that people would park
there even if we could go with a narrower street and no parking on either side or one -side.
He gave the standard widths for each scenario.
Councilmember Dehen inquired if this is a 38 -foot road to which Mr. Olson replied 32
feet.
City Engineer Jankowski stated we would restrict parking on the one side.
Councilmember Dehen asked would parking be on a designated side.
Mr. Jankowski stated that it would be signed and striped.
Mr. Olson added that is a standard.
Councilmember Look stated that the decision of with sidewalks or without sidewalks has
to be made.
Mr. Jankowski replied yes, but after the project is ordered.
Mr. Olson stated he realizes it is difficult for Council to make the decision without
knowing the costs, but staff would like some direction.
Councilmember Look stated he does not know if it is advantageous to say we want to
build the street and later put in a sidewalk. He felt that the decision boils down to if the
City Council wants a sidewalk or not and noted the goal of walkability where possible.
He did not know if going back after the fact would solve anything
Councilmember Jeffrey stated that he agrees with Councilmember Look. He stated he
(Jeffrey) is all about public safety and getting children off the street. He felt if it were not
done now, we would be coming back at a later date and saying we need sidewalks. He
suggested this is an opportunity to put in the sidewalk and he felt the City ought to do it.
Director of Public Works Olson expressed gratitude to the neighborhood first of all as
this discussion is a result of many of their discussions. He inquired of Council if there is
a consensus to favor the sidewalk.
City Engineer Jankowski stated the Council could direct the feasibility study to be
modified to say a sidewalk will or will not be included.
Councilmember Dehen stated he is still "flip- flopping ". He wondered why there could
not be two feasibility studies — one with a sidewalk and one without, and find out which
one the residents counter- petition against.
Mr. Olson stated that their assessment numbers would not change whether there is a
sidewalk or not — that is the City's cost.
City Council /January 13, 2009
