McKinley Street is proposed for eventual extension into the City of Anoka by providing a
connecting link to Thurston Street. Traffic volumes could be expected to increase significantly
when this occurs. Staff recommends the posting of a stop sign on the north leg of the
intersection of McKinley and Unity Street.

Councilmember Elvig noted it sounds like there have been a couple accidents over the course of
the year. He does not see any reason not to install the stop sign with this amount of traffic.

Motion by Councilmember Elvig, seconded by Councilmember Cook, to recommend that the
City Council authorize the posting of a stop sign on the north leg of the intersection of McKinley
and Unity Street. .

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Zimmerman, Councilmembers Elvig and Cook.
Voting No: None.

COMMITTEE INPUT

Councilmember Elvig requested staff look at the potential of flashing lights in front of the
elementary school. He noted the county indicated they might be willing to participate with this in
next year's budget.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Councilmember Elvig, seconded by Councilmember Cook, to adjourn the meeting.

Motion carried.

The regular meeting ofthe Public Works Committee adjourned at 5:55 p.m.

Carol Hamer
Recording Secretary
TimeSaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc.

Dean Kapler
Director of Public WorkslFire Chief

Public Works Committee/March 16,2004
Page 5 of5
