CASE # 1

Environmental Expo & Booth Discussion
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

At the February meeting, Staffwas directed to add a case regarding the Environmental Expo
event and the Board's booth for discussion at the March meeting. Staff retained the display info
from the Board's 2008 expo booth, which at least partially focused on water conservation. This
would be an option for this year's event, as the topic is certainly relevant, or the Board may wish
to consider other topics for their 2009 booth.

Staff also wanted to take a moment to update the Board regarding the expo event, confirmed
exhibitors/presenters and the tree sale. The event is set for April 25, 2009 from 9am to 2pm at
the Municipal Center. This year, the City is also coordinating a Business Expo which will be
held the same day and time at the Pact Charter School. This allows for some cross promotion
and a greater marketing effort. Marketing/promotion for the event includes or has included:
utility bill insert 'save the date' (January mailing), Ramsey Resident newsletter (Feb issue and
March/April issue), website, Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce newsletter (Feb and March), a
direct mail postcard (March or April), Ramsey Elementary School (info to go home with
students), temporary signs and possibly the Anoka Shopper.

Thus far, confirmed exhibitors include: ACE Solid Waste, Connexus Energy, LRRWMO,
Simply Neutral, Master Naturalists, and Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve. Examples of
others that have been contacted but have not yet confirmed include U of M Bee Lab/MN Hobby
Beekeepers Association, Anoka Conservation District, Prairie Restorations, MN Herpetological
Society, Geological Society of MN, Tree Care Advisors (Tree House of Horrors) and Oliver
Kelly Farm. Staffhas also secured the U ofM Raptor Center between lOam and Ipm.

There are three tree vendors participating in the tree sale event this year. Through a partnership
with Green Valley Greenhouse, Hostas and More and Maple Leaf Landscaping, residents again
have an opportunity to pre-order trees and pick them up the day of the event. The list of
available species can be found on the website.

Finally, speakers that have been confirmed to date include Connexu~ Energy (energy
conservation tips) and a speaker on energy efficient landscaping. Staff is hoping to secure a
speaker on canary reed grass through the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve and is
exploring the possibility of a presentation updating folks on the Clean Water, Land and Legacy
amendment that was passed by voters last November and how those funds may be spent.

EPB Action

No action is necessary; this is for informational purposes only.

EPB: 3/2/09
