CASE #6

DISCUSS RESTROOM AVAILABILITY AT CENTRAL PARK
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor

Background:

Earlier this year, the Park and Recreation Commission conducted a lengthy discussion relative to
the availability of restrooms at Central Park. At the center of the matter was a desire to have an
automatic door locking system at one or more of the three buildings - such that the restrooms
would be available all day and evenings for park patrons, and lock themselves with a timer at 10
pm.

Observations:

The following is the itemized cost of retrofitting one building at Central Park. The retrofitting
however does not solve the complication of ensuring that the interior doors are locked by
evening users of the building when they leave - but this is believed to be manageable. The
largest issue appears to be maintaining sanitary conditions in a time where staffing reductions are
being discussed, as well as the anticipated propensity for vandalism in a park where there are
periods of time with no 'eyes' on the facilities.

Magnetic door locking system for Central Park buildings
Per two bathrooms for each building
. Power supply box with backup battery (1)

. Programmable LCD timer (1)

. Electromagnetic locks (2)

.
