<br />Councilmember <br /> <br />introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION #09-04-_ <br /> <br />RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 4, 2009 AS "ARBOR DAY" AND THE <br />MONTH OF MAY 2009 AS "ARBOR MONTH" <br /> <br />WHEREAS, trees are an increasingly vital resource in Minnesota today and <br />enrich our lives by purifying air, soil and water, conserving and protecting soil from <br />erosive forces, providing local energy, creating jobs through forest products, serving as <br />beautiful recreational settings, providing habitat for life of all kinds, reducing stormwater <br />runoff, making our cities more livable and promoting personal health, community health <br />and resilient ecosystem health; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, trees increase property values and enhance the economic vitality of <br />business areas; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, human activities such as construction damage, regional and distant <br />source pollution, as well as certain diseases and pests, threaten our trees creating the need <br />for concerted adaptive and collaborative action by locally planting, nurturing and <br />protecting trees for benefit of citizenry, economy and ecology; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Ramsey will be recognized for the seventeenth (17th) <br />consecutive year, (2008), as a Tree City USA; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Oaks are the most enduring and valued trees in our landscape, we <br />are urged to plant and preserve their legacy for our descendants through stewardship; and <br />to plant disease resistant American Elms to restore their place in our wooded landscape <br />inventory. <br /> <br />NOW ,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF RAMSEY, ANOKA COUNTY, STATE OF MINNESOTA, as follows: <br /> <br />1) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims May 4, 2009 as "Arbor Day". <br /> <br />2) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims the month of Mayas "Arbor <br />Month" . <br /> <br />3) That the Ramsey City Council urges all citizens to plant trees as part of Ramsey's <br />living history, to participate in Oak Wilt disease control and other disease/pest <br />programs that will ensure an enduring tree canopy, and collaborate with partners <br />and volunteers to develop and implement policies to plant, nurture, protect, and <br />steward our natural diversity with education for its use and care. <br /> <br />4) That the Ramsey City Council encourages efforts to maintain our historic sites <br />with significant tree species and enhance diversity that does support traditional <br />
