M E M 0
TO: Dave Hartley, City Administrator R FrIV Fn
FROM: Merland Otto, Hakanson Anderson Associates, Inc. M AR ? 1987
DATE: March 30, 1987 Ails
RE: Airport and Burlington Northern Railroad
Your March 24, 1987 memo requested that we clarify the issue of the
airport's impact on the railroad and any review that has taken place
in this regard.
Federal Aviation Regulation Part 77.23 defines the necessary approach
clearances for determining obstructions. Said regulations require 23'
of clearance over all railroads - that same height being the standard
for all railroad tunnels in the United States. Thus, any and all
material transported by rail is restricted to less than 23' in height.
Mn /DOT, Division of Aeronautics and FAA review the ALP. No other
review is required as long as the minimum approach clearance of 23'
over the railroad is maintained.
From a practical standpoint, a quick look through the Minnesota
Airport Directory shows numerous airport /railroad circumstances
similar to Gateway. Among these are airports at Bagley, Barnsville,
Clarissa, Clear Lake, Crystal (Mpls.), Hallock, Lakeville, Park
Rapids, Perham, Pipestone, Sandstone, Walker, Willmar and Winona.
If you need additional information, let me know. At the same time, we
have recommended obtaining an easement over the railroad right -of -way.
Thus, opening a line of communication may be desirable.
r
