Case # 2

IDGHWAY 10 MARQUIS SIGN
By: Sean Sullivan, E~onomic Development Coordinator

Background:

A thorough marketing/advertising program for the City of Ramsey and Ramsey Town Center is necessary to
produce development and commerce in the current economic environment. City officials began marketing
Ramsey, and the Town Center, to potential developers and retailers at lCSC and are continuing that effort.
Ramsey has been working on defining its identity for quite some time. Efforts through the participation in
Town Center, and the construction of large, detailed population signs at the city's borders have been steps that
help separate Ramsey from being an extension of Anoka, or "on the way to Elk River". A large marquis sign
on US Highway 10 defining "place" and being used in conjunction with Ramsey Town Center activities could
be a way to further define what Ramsey is, or what it can be.

Observations:

Recently, the Ramsey EDA participated in a LED sign for the Sunfish Commons project to help mitigate the
impact of the median. Since then, Northstar Marketplace has constructed a larger marquis sign at Armstrong
Boulevard to help the retailers and tenant of their shopping center. On June 16, the City purchased the Clint
Wilson property located on Highway 10 right in front of City. Hall and the Town Center. This site would be an
ideal location for a large Marquis sign for utilization of the City of Ramsey. The City would be able to utilize
the sign for community events, meeting dates and other marketing/advertising that would be appropriate for the
City. Currently, the City is working with the Anoka County License Center to relocate its current Ramsey.
location to the Municipal Center. A need for some additional signage has been communicated to the City by the
License Center and a marquis sign would accomplish that need. Staff is looking for direction to look into
greater detail on this concept.

Funding Source: To be determined

Recommendation:

Based on Discussion

EDA Action:

Based on Discussion

EDA: 07.09.09

17
