Public Notice

~

Cooking Fires
Leading Cause of Fire

Cooking fires cause hundreds of deatlls aIld
thousands of injuries in our nation each year. Here
in Minnesota we suffered 2 deaths. 44 civiliaIl
injuries aIld 4 firefighter injuries during 2006 from
cooking fires. This fact, along with tlle more than
$2.5 million in propelty loss, make reducing these
statistics a priority to the Ramsey Fire Depmtment.

Here are a few "recipes for safety" in your
kitchen:
1. Keep things that burn away from the cook-
ing area aIld appliaIlces in your kitchen
2. CleaIl any grease build-up from the stove.
oven aIld exhaust fan regularly. Keep
a lid, aIld a fire extinguisher haIldy in
the kitchell. Slide a lid over the pan to
smother a small pail fire.
3. Avoid reaching over the stove for anything
while cooking. Store frequently needed
items in other areas of the kitchen. Keep
young children & pets away from cooking
areas entirely.
4. Keep pot handles turned inward, out of the
reach of children aIld pets.
5. Keep appliaIlCe cords up on counter tops.
Check those cords regularly for frayed or
broken spots. Replace damaged cords or
appliaI1Ces.
6. Dress appropriately for fire safety in the
kitchen.
7. Never leave cooking unattended.
8. Shield yourself from steaIll when uncover-
ing food, especially microwave servings.
SteaIll can cause serious burns.
Following these simple tips may sound like
common sense, but the result of being complacent
in the kitchen can be very tragic. Keeping your
family aIld home safe from fire
is the responsibility of everyone
in the home. The Ramsey Fire
Depmtment would like you to
discuss these impOltant tips as a
family aIld should you have any
questions, please feel free to call
us at 763-427-4452.

i\.a.PPJ/
~~~ 11th Annual
~ ~ r Happy Days Festival
Of Ra:mIl"Y
Please join us for the 11th Annual Happy Days Festival to
be held on Saturday, September 19 stmting at 10:00 aIll at the
RaIllsey Municipal Center, 7550 Sunwood Drive NW.
