<br />Board Member Stodola stated that he is concerned that providing too much detail may actually <br />turn people away. He stated that a certain level of detail is good, but people may get <br />overwhelmed with information and just skip right over everything. <br /> <br />Environmental Coordinator Anderson suggested that Board MemberEnstrom take his turn with <br />editing, just as the others had their opportunity, and then the Board as a whole could review the <br />section again in November. <br /> <br />BOARD/STAFF INPUT <br /> <br />Councilmember Wise inquired about what the city does about oak wilt and Dutch elm disease. <br /> <br />Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that there are regulations in city code about these <br />two shade tree diseases that are very clear regarding inspecting for the diseases, noticing <br />property owners of infected trees and requiring removal of trees. These regulations have been in <br />place for 20 years or so but have never been actively enforced. He stated that he has actually <br />been trying to get some direction on whether he should be actively enforcing these regulations. <br /> <br />Councilmember Wise stated that he has had some concerns with oak wilt on his property in the <br />past. <br /> <br />Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that the regulations also layout the procedure for <br />abating diseased trees if a property owner does not comply. He stated that it is very similar to <br />the nuisance abatement process in which the city would complete the work and then assess the <br />cost back to the property owner. <br /> <br />Board Member Enstrom inquired about potentially looking for grant monies that could be used to <br />start planting more boulevard trees, especially considering that so many of them now consist of <br />green ash, which is threatened by the Emerald Ash Borer. <br /> <br />There was also discussion about formulating a master street tree plan for the community. This <br />would help avoid a mishmash of trees along boulevards and give a more symmetrical <br />appearance. To minimize potential losses due to insects or disease, maybe there should be <br />groups of species with similar characteristics that could be assigned to a street, which would help <br />to maintain the symmetry while still allowing for a diverse mix of species. <br /> <br />Board Member Enstrom stated that he attended the WMO meeting last week and updated the <br />Board about discussions that occurred at that meeting. <br /> <br />ADJOURNMENT <br /> <br />Motion by Board Member Riley-Daniels and seconded by Board Member Stodola to adjourn the <br />meeting. <br /> <br />The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p;m. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />Environmental Policy Board / October 5, 2009 <br />Page 4 of5 <br />
