Case # 5

ICSC CHIGAGO UPDATE AND FUTUREICSC PARTICIPATION

By: Sean M. Sullivan, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

The EDA authorized registration for the Economic Development Coordinator to attend lCSC
Dealmaking in Chicago. The purpose of the trip was two-fold. Staff c1J.ose to drive in order to
take some time to look at another transit based development that highlighted commuter rail in a
Chicago suburb. Staff will go ~ver some pictures and have some information avail~ble from
"The Glen" located in the Village of Glenview. Th~ conference itself was very condensed and a
lot of productive meetings were hel~ with developers,"brokers and individual retailers. A
sUllliJ1ary of the meetings is attached for your review. The general attitude in the retail world has
improved since lCSC in Las Vegas and there is optimism about when the next year has in store
for this market. Cottage Grove had a strong presence in this show with its individual booth and a
contingent of four to work the floor and market their Community. The cost of this type of "set-
up" is estimated to run between $1,000-2,000 according to Skip Greeby, an lCSC Board .
. member. The EDA should consider the level of participation in these type of events to illaximize
its efficiencies.

. The lCSC conference in Las Vegas is the largest retail trade show in the United StateS.
Developers, Retailer, Broker and Land owners are all present to try to build relationships and to
get some deals done. The EDA authorized the City Administrator and Economic Development
Coordinator to attend the conference for 2009. The Rainsey City Council also authorized
sending three of its members (two. of which are EDA members) to the conference to add to the
Ramsey contingent. City Staff and Officials met with over 100 developers, retailers, brokers and
site . selectors to help build relationships. At the :December .1, 2009 Meeting, the BRA authorized .
registration for the City Administrator and Economic Development Coordinator to attend lCSe
Las Vegas for 2010 for a cost of$360.per person. This took advantage of an early bird
registration and saved $65 per person. Staff is asking the EDA to consider funding the Economic
Development Coordinator and the City Administrator for this conference.

An organized plan of attack should be implemented for the next year to be as efficient as.
possible. The EDA should consider the level of participation in this process and recoinmend
what course of action it feels would be the most productive. Items to consider are outlined
below.

. Number and identity of persons participating I each event on behalf of the EDA
~ lCSC RECON
. lCSC Deal Making
. lCSe Membership
. City of Ramsey Booth(s).

23
