MARQUIS SIGN INFORMATION (PRESENTATION)

By: Sean M. Sullivan, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

Case # 1

Hwy 10 is one of the fastest growing transportation corridors in the nation. Discussion by the
EDA involving signage along this corridor to help with a community billboard, community
identity and potential advertising has lead to subsequent questions on how this can be
accomplished and how much it could cost. John Mylrea, from Grabow Communications has
given the EDA some general sign information which has been very helpful. Staffwas directed to
gather more information and to research other options including Clear Channel. John Mylrea has
also asked a representative from Daktronics to accompany him to the December meeting to
present more informatio~ of sign types, subsequent cost and capability.

A better understanding of signage capability, maintenance and content management has lead to
some key follow-up questions:

. What type of sign do we want?
. What are the cap.abilities we want out of that sign?
. How.big should the sign be?
. What is the use of this sign?
. Who should own the sign?
. Who should manage the sign content?
. How is the sign funded?
. Advertising revenue?
. Can, or should the sign be put on Hwy 10?

After the presentation and discussion the EDA should try to decide on most of these questions.
The answers to those questions will determine what direction Staff needs to go to make this sign
reality or to move on to other ideas. Sign ownership and cost is a big driver of this project and
should be discussed. Billboard type signs on Hwy 10 are prohibited per current ordinance.
Amendments to our current code would have to be made in order to put up a large sign for
advertisement.

Funding Source: EDA levy, Private ownership, Public/Private Partnership

Staff Recommendation:

Based on discussion.

EDA Action:

Based on discussion.

EDA: 12.10.09

7
