Case

DEMOGRAPHIC AND HOUSING INFORMATION
By: Amy Geisler, Community Development Department

Background:

At its January 16th, 2003 meeting the Ramsey Housing Committee requested general
demographic information for the City of Ramsey as well as specific information about
the city's housing stock.

The following attachments are included with this case:

Demographic summary
Profile of general demographic characteristics: 2000
Map: Age of structures within the city (includes residential and non-residential)
Map: Assessed values within the city (includes residential and non-residential)

Observations:

The attached information shows that Ramsey's population will continue to grow in
coming years. Median household income in the city is high ($68,988) compared to Anoka
County ($57,754) and the metropolitan area ($54,332). The two attached maps show that
the majority of housing in the city was built during the 1960s and 1970s, with a more
recent increase in building in the 1990s and 2000s. As might be expected, housing built
in the 1960s and 1970s is among the lowest-valued housing in the city.

More detailed information on housing quality in the city is not currently available, though
housing information from the 2000 Census should be available later in the year. Some
counties in the Twin Cities area include a 'housing condition' score in their assessment
database; Anoka County does not. More detailed information on housing condition would
need to be collected through a housing condition survey.

RHC Action:

None required.

Review Checklist:
City Administrator
Associate Planner

RHC: 2.20.03
