Tim Marx Named MHFA Commissioner <br /> <br /> · , By Luke Avery <br /> <br />On April 17, 2003, Governor Tim Pawlenty appointed Tim <br />Marx as the new commissioner of the Minnesota <br />Housing Finance Agency (MHFA). The Governor welcomed <br />the new Commissioner in the official announcement of his <br /> <br />appointment, saying that Marx will "tackle the affordable <br />housing challenge facing this state with creativity and <br />compassion." <br /> The new Commissioner responded by praising the MHFA <br />and the work it does, and promising to improve the state's <br />housing situation. "1 am honored and humbled by Governor <br /> <br />Pawlenty~ appointment. The <br />MHFA is an invaluable resource <br />and a key part of a broad and <br />diverse public/private <br />partnership which works to <br />provide.decent, affordable <br />housing for our state", said <br />Marx. "Regardless of the <br />current fiscal challenges, this <br />partnership is poised to be <br /> <br />"1 am honored and humbled by Governor <br />Pawlenty~ appointment. The MHFA is an <br />invaluable resource and'a key part of a <br />broad and diverse public/private partnership <br />which works to provide decent, affordable <br />housing for our State" <br />- Tim Marx, MHFA Commissioner <br /> <br />taken to the next level so that workers have homes and our <br />economy can grow, so that the Minnesota and American <br />dream of homeownership can become a reality to more in our <br />state, and so that our most vulnerable are not left to the streets." <br /> HousingMinnesota consultant Chuck Slocum met with <br />Marx soon after his appointment, and the Commissioner <br />identified several priorities for MHFA under his leadership, <br />including supportive housing for the long-term homeless and <br />workforce housing. <br /> Commissioner Marx brings a strong background to his <br />new position, including extensive experience in housing and <br />government administration. He comes to MHFA from Briggs <br /> <br />and Morgan, Professional Association, where he was an <br />attorney and shareholder in the Business Litigation Section. <br />Since joining the firm in 1986, Marx has provided legal advice <br />regarding housing and community development activities to <br />nonprofits organizations, businesses and foundations. He has <br />also served as legislative counsel to statewide organizations <br />working in housing, community development, and public <br />finance, and as general counsel to several nonprofit <br />organizations, including The Amherst J. Wilder Foundation and <br />Catholic Charities of St. Paul & Minneapolis. <br /> In 1993, Marx left his position at Briggs and Morgan to <br />serve as St. Paul City Attorney under Mayor Norm Coleman. <br />While working with Coleman~ administration, Marx developed <br />the Cit.,v~ agenda for housing and development and led the <br />implementation effort for this plan. He also played a key role <br />in other development and policy initiatives, and worked to build <br />public/private partnerships. <br /> In 1997, he became Deputy Mayor. In this capacity, Marx <br />led efforts to consolidate city departments and departmental <br />functions. In 1998, he left the city administration and returne <br />to Briggs and Morgan, where he continued his work <br /> regulatory and litigation <br /> matters and public/private <br /> initiatives. <br /> Marx received his B.A. degree <br />in government and economics <br />magna cum laude from St. <br />John~ University, and served an <br />internship in the office of the <br />Vice President of the United <br />States.
