<br /> A Study by Wilder Research Center
<br />"Our Children: Our Future" is an ambitious effort to unite
<br />Minnesotans committed to ensuring healthy homes, loving
<br />families, and community support for all children. This project
<br />seeks to create a statewide forum to identify and address the
<br />needs of Minnesota§ most vulnerable children. Wilder Research
<br />Center developed a background report on Minnesot¢ children
<br />who do not live at home to provide a common knowledge base
<br />for community discussions.
<br /> Each year, an estimated 30,000 Minnesota children are
<br />away from home for their own protection or because of
<br />delinquency, or are living alone on the street. This report takes
<br />a combined look at these three groups, describing what we
<br />know about them and how "the system"works. The report also
<br />presents evidence about the effectiveness of different living
<br />situations and services for children and families in crisis and
<br />suggests seven critical issues for community discussion.
<br /> This study gathers information on virtually all Minnesota
<br />children at risk of placement and those not living at home.
<br />Researchers conducted a review of studies concerning the
<br />effectiveness of current services and laws as well as funding
<br />related to the placement of children. Wilder Research Center
<br />also surveyed professionals in the fields of child protection,
<br />_juvenile probation, and the court system.
