CASE #
CONSIDER LIGHTING REQUIREMENT AT STREET CROSSWALKS
By: Steven Jankowski, Assistant City Engineer
Background:
Staff received a request to consider placing a street light at the marked crosswalk located at Alpine Drive
and Zuni Street. Staff reviewed marked crosswalks throughout the city at mid block locations where a
subdivision or priority street light are not routinely provided. Below is a summary of the review:
Loc Street location lighting Condition Comments
1 Alpine Dr near Krypton St no light
2 Alpine Dr near Zuni no light
3 Sunwood Dr near Zuni no light
4 150t" Lane near Waco no light -needs signage
5 160t" Lane in Northfork pvt light within 100feet
6 162"d Lane in Northfork has pvt light
7 Inverness Lane near Inverness Circle no light golf cart crossing
8 Inverness Lane near Inverness Court Pvt light within 70 feet golf cart crossing
9 169t" Ave in Rum River Hills no light golf cart crossing
10 Iodine St in Rum River Hills no light golf cart crossing
Since to purpose for the crosswalk is to encourage pedestrians to cross at a safe location, it would be
appropriate to extend protection to night time conditions. Note that 4 of the ten locations are at golf
cart path crossings. Assuming that there is little use of these paths by pedestrians after dark, it would be
reasonable to eliminate the need for lighting at these locations. Location No 6 has a street light which is
operated by the Northfork Home owners association. A light is located 50 to 70 feet from the crosswalk
at location #5 which is also a privately owned by the Northfork Homeowners Association. This light
should be evaluated to determine whether it provides adequate lighting for the crosswalk. The locations
of these crosswalks are illustrated on the enclosed attachments. Staff review of the crosswalk locations
also identified the need for an additional crosswalk located on Alpine Drive between Ute Street and
Tonto (an illustration of this location is also provided).
Financial Impact:
The cost of placing a street light at a single location is roughly $2000 for installation and.about $100
annually for power which would be funded through the Street Light Utility Fund. The installation of a
new crosswalk including ped ramps, painting, and signage would be approximately-$1,800 which would
be charged to the public works general account.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that it be directed to prepare individual cost proposals for each of the above
locations for further review and consideration from the Council.
