City Administrator Ulrich stated that we have two very successful church festivals in
town — maybe that Sunday they could have a service in the a.m. and do a music event.
Councilmember Elvig commented with regard to the volunteers that we have to be
careful with them — they do a good job. Maybe it time to sit with them and find out what
they need to support a larger event.
Mayor Ramsey asked what do you do to fill the time to keep people here.
Councilmember McGlone stated that the Environmental/Business Expo this year was
phenomenal — maybe we should engage in more of that.
Mayor Ramsey mentioned Father Hennepin Days.
Mr. Ulrich stated that the City of Champlin sponsors things around the City — there are
boat races, contests, etc. — it gives everyone something to do.
Mayor Ramsey stated he liked the idea of expanding Happy Days.
Councilmember Elvig asked if we would do that working with the existing group.
Councilmember Wise cautioned that we do not have a lot of time to get this going.
Councilmember Look stated a professional organization could do it.
Mayor Ramsey suggested maybe Council needs to have a few meetings with the
Committee and explain Council's ideas and offer our assistance. For this year we need to
"plug some holes ". We need to fill some time between the parade and the time the band
starts. Then we can plan for the following year to really ramp it up - make it a two -day
event — and add three Councilmembers to the committee.
Councilmembers Elvig, Look and Wise volunteered to be, on the committee for Happy
Days.
Mr. Ulrich offered that Ms. Hendricks would schedule a meeting. Mayor Ramsey stated
this committee will convey Council's wishes and ideas.
Councilmember Dehen inquired what could be done to push a boat launch.
Mr. Ulrich stated Ramsey does not have representatives on the County Park Board and
this is one issue. He suggested the County Park Board could be lobbied.
Councilmember Dehen felt that would be a great amenity for this event. We have Scouts
who could volunteer to make bark trails — we can put some concrete down — we can start
incrementally.
City Council Work Session — January 5, 2010
Page 6 of 9
