We make history fun!
Let the Anoka County Historical Society
(ACHS) make your day! ACHS offers a
variety of programs tailored to meet any
interest level. If you have a half -hour or a
whole day, we'll keep you interested and
entertained while enlivening history. The
following are the programs we currently
offer, but we can always develop a new
program to meet your needs.
HISTORY CENTER MUSEUM
Looking for a great way to meet everyone's
interests? Come to the Anoka County Historical
Society's History Center Museum! There's
something for everyone in our exhibit hall —from
memorabilia to the military. Our exhibits change
frequently and many include interactive
components. The exhibit hall is self - guided, so
you can take as much or as little time as you'd
like. Our facility is handicapped accessible.
Museum admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for
children ages 6 -17.
GROUP WALKING TOURS
Take a walking tour through the heart of the
county seat —the City of Anoka. Built at the
confluence of two great rivers, Anoka has historic
homes and businesses lining its wide streets.
Your guide will highlight historic photos of the
past while you look at the present to see it "then
and now." Guided walking tours are $5.00 for
adults and $2.00 for children ages 6 -17. ACHS
can also develop tours for other communities at
your request ($15 per hour research fee.)
SELF - GUIDED WALKING TOUR
The self - guided walking tour is similar to the
guided tour, just taken at your own pace. The
tour pamphlet provides you with historical
background as you stroll through the
neighborhoods and parks of Anoka. This tour is
ideal for families, as the text is directed at school -
age children. There is a small cost for the self -
guided walking tour booklet.
CEMETERY TOURS
Our "Monuments to Life" cemetery tours are an up-
close and personal look at Anoka County's ancestors,
their incredible stories, and the beautiful artwork
found on their memorials. You can choose to visit
one county cemetery or a series of cemeteries.
Cemetery tours are $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for
children ages 6 -17 for each cemetery visited. Tours
occur in early October each year, however, special
arrangements can be made for groups at anytime.
LIVING HISTORY PROGRAMS
A costumed historian with manners and artifacts
appropriate to the time period will present a one -hour
living history program. Each program is $90 and
mileage must be charged if the program is presented
outside Anoka County. The following is a list of
programs:
A Civil War Christmas
The guests of this program hear the music of the
season, decorate a tree, taste a Christmas treat, and try
out some of the gifts of a Christmas in Anoka County
celebrated during the hard years of the Civil War.
Campaigning for Lincoln
Ms Wendel portrays a fictional lyceum speaker
involved in one of Anoka's social organizations called
the "Wide Awakes." The "Wide Awakes" were a real
nonpartisan, political and social support club in Anoka
during the Civil War. Ms. Wendel remains in
character during her speech, speaking and thinking as
if the year was really 1864 and President Abraham
Lincoln was running for reelection.
Early Education in Anoka -1870s
In this program, Jennie Powell talks about her life as a
teacher in the town of Anoka in the 1870s. Teaching
in a town school was quite different from a one -room
country schoolhouse. Miss Powell shares her daily
activities, the 3 R' s, rules and exams, and compares
schools of today with the schools of years ago. This
program is flexible in its content to meet the needs of
any age group.
Fashion Trends
The political, social, and etiquette issues of
dress are discussed in this program. Take a look
back at clothing worn in the mid- to late -19`
century, from the invention of the sewing ma-
chine to the ready -made clothing purchased
from the mail order catalog. The presentation
includes artifacts from the ACHS hands -on col-
lection presented by a fashionably dressed
woman of the 1860's.
Tastes and Sounds of
Minnesota in the Civil War
"Tastes and Sounds" takes a hands -on approach
to discussing the Civil War. The presentation
features artifacts, pictures, music, and a special
taste of a soldier's typical fare. The program
content is flexible and we can meet the needs of
children or adults.
Quilts and Their Stories
Quilts can do much more than warm your toes
on a cold winter night! They can tell stories,
paint pictures, and bring back memories. This
traveling program brings slides of some very
special quilts and their stories of life in Anoka
County.
Speaker's Bureau
We bring community history programs on
any Anoka County community or Anoka
County history to groups of all ages. These can
be tailored for lunch or dinner speeches and can
range in length from 20 minutes to one hour.
Don't see the program you'd like? We'll
create one for you! If you have interest in a
special history topic, let us know and we'll de-
velop a special program just for your group.
Speaker's bureau presentations are $50 per hour
plus a $15 per hour research fee.
