TO: City Administrator

FROM: Building Official

RE: Monthly and Annual Report

DATE: December 30, 1980

December proved quite uneventful with only five new housing starts.

.

Letters were sent to several individuals that had applied for and not pur-
chased building permits as well as Marsh Optical for an unauthorized sign
on T.H. #10. A stop work order was placed on the Minnesota Utility build-
ing as they had not acquired a permit or met the terms of their agreement
with the City. At this time, their permit has not yet been issued because
of building code non compliance and our not receiving our development bond.

Construction for the year was down approximately the same as was common in
the metropolitan area. We did, however, far better than most of our adjoin-
ing communi ties.

There were fifty housing starts for the year which is 55% of the 1979 total.
Valuation was a $3.5 million which is also 55% of the 1979 total. Even
though there is a need for more housing, it does not look like there will
be much improvement in the building industry until late in 1981.

.

On January 5, 1981, I met with several of the northern area building
officials to review what the various communities are charging for permits.
I will cover this item with a separate report with some recommended changes.
It would appear that we are the lowest in the surrounding area.

Permits issued, mileage and inspections are as follows:

Permits Issued Permit Fee Valuation Surcharge
A. Houses 5 $1,062.00 $328,000.00 $164.00
B. Comm/Ind. 0
c. Garages 2 56.00 8,000 4.00
D. Additions 0
E. Swim. Pools 0
c F. Misc. 0
G. Sewers 9 135.00
H. Plumbing 5 108.00
I. Totals 21 $1,361. 00 $336,000.00 $168.00
