CASE #~
CONSIDER FORMAL DEDICATION FOR THE RAMSEY LION'S CONTRIBUTION
FOR CENTRAL PARK'S PAVILION
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor
Background:
In 2006, City Council authorized the construction of the replacement of the concession stand and
shelter at Central Park with a significantly larger, modern structure. The approximately
$425,000 project was initiated by a $367,000 contribution from the Ramsey Lions for this
purpose.
The Ramsey Lions' have functioned as the most prominent philanthropic organization in the City
for decades -providing financial contributions to parks, police and fire, the youth athletic
association, Youth First, the Lion's sight and hearing program, as well as a significant local
scholarship program serving both area colleges.
Observations:
The purpose of this case is to acknowledge specifically, the Ramsey Lions for their role in
bringing the pavilion and concession stand to Central Park by a formal dedication of this
building. Proposed is a bronze plaque to be permanently affixed to this building so that the
public may be fully aware of the Lion's contributions to the community.
Staff proposes that this occur at the Park and Recreation Commissions' regular meeting,
scheduled to be held Thursday, June 10~', 2010 at 6:30 pm at Central Park. (This same evening
may also serve as the annual joint meeting with City Council.) Further, Central Park will be in
peak use by residents that evening who have children in the youth athletic program - so that
these families may recognize the Lion's important role in the community as well.
Funding
The cost of a suitable bronze plaque would range from approximately $340 to $440, depending
upon the size. Staff recommends a 14" x 10" ($440), which may be placed on the column facing
the sidewalk leading up to the shelter, as shown on the attached image. Also shown for
informational purposes, is the dedication plaque within the Park Center Building that was
completed in 1989.
Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends proceeding with the dedication, with the funding source, the Lawful Gambling
Improvement Fund -which is the same fund that provided the balance of monies for the
building's completion, and one that receives the benefit from the Lion's charitable gambling
activity in the City.
