I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

I
I

FC Agenda

Authorization to PurChase Digital Cameras for-Police Department
By: Captain Tim Dwyer

Background'

The police department has three (3) older 35mm Cameras that we would like to replace with three (3)
Olympus Digital Cameras. One 35 mm camera was taken out of service last.year and cannot be repaired; the
other two have reached their useful life and should be replaced shOrtly. Recently we have seen many police
agencies migrating to digital photography for criminal investigations, evidence documentation and advanced
records retention capabilities. Digital photos are the preferred method of documenting evidence by the
Anoka County Sheriffs Office Crime Lab and County Attorney's Office. Digital cameras would also be a
valuable tool to enhance our existing and future crime prevention endeavors and would allow for web
applications.

The requested purchase would include three (3) digital cameras and the necessary operating Supplies. The
Anoka County Sheriff's Office researched and sought quotes from several vendors and found National
Graphic Supply has cameras that meet their specs with the lowest price available. We have the opportunity
to obtain the same package deal as is being offered the Sheriffs Office. If this purchase is authorized, two (2)
digital carneras would be placed in patrol vehicles for 24 hour availability. The other would be used by our
Crime Prevention Specialist and would be available for use by other city staff as requested. The purchase of
these cameras and applicable supplies can be fully funded from the Equipment Replacement Fund (Fixed
Assets # 001124, # 001594, and #001849).

Recommendation:

Staff recornmends Council adopt the Resolution # 03-04~XXX, authorizing the police department to
purchase the above mentioned Digital Cameras and accessories from National Graphic Supply utilizing
$1,584.00 from the Equipment Replacement Fund.

Council Action:

Motion by City Council to adopt resolution # 03-02-XXX, authorizing the police department to Purchase
tl-zree (3) Olympus Digital Cameras, cases, and applicable media memory cards and batteries from National
Graphic Supply utilizing funds from the Equipment Replacement Fund not to exceed $1,584.00.

REVIEWED BY:

Chief Jim Way
City Administrator Jim Norman
Asst City AdministTator Heidi Nelson

-373-
