1.3 PROJECT SETTING
Gateway North Industrial Airport is located in the south central
portion of Ramsey in a large industrial zoned area of
approximately 1,200 acres. The airport is well located for
access from the Anoka -Ramsey -Elk River corridor. Increasing
development, subsequent traffic levels and traffic controls on
Highway 10 make the airport's location more attractive and
serviceable for area needs than Anoka County Airport in Blaine.
Anoka County is one of the fastest growing counties in the State
with population increasing from 154,556 in 1970 to an estimated
198,520 in 1987. The City of Ramsey has experienced even more
rapid growth with a population increase from 2,500 people in
1970 to an estimated`11,860 in 1987..
The City has a. relatively high proportion of,yOung-residents
with a higher median family income than, that of either the
metropolitan area as a whole and the State median. The majority
of residents in the labor force work outside of the City. How-
ever, the City is also experiencing a growth in.the.commercial
and industrial sectors which is providing, increasing employment
opportunities within the City.
The area around the airport is predominantly zoned industrial
with relatively large undeveloped. tracts. Commercial strip'.
development has occurred along U.S. Highway.10:sporadically,
along the entire length from Anoka to Elk River. Single family
residential development occurs predominantly. to the.north-
northwest of the existing airport with some development, between
Highway 10 and the Mississippi River. Figure1r4 illustrates
the airport environs.
1-6
