ALTERNATIVE A
Figure 4-3 illustrates Alternative A. As shown, a single 3300
feet paved runway would be developed on virtually the same
alignment as existing Runway 16-34. The runway would be shifted
approximately 170 feet north of the existing threshold and
terminate approximately 300 feet south of the County State Aid
Highway (CSAH) 116 right-of-way.
In order to achieve necessary approach clearances (23 feet over
the railroad and 15 feet over CSAH 116), the proposed runway
ends would have to be raised significantly. The southerly end
of the runway would require approximately 15 feet of fill while
the northern end would require approximately eight feet of fill.
The disadvantages of this concept are that the runway is
severely restricted, the additional costs of fill, and the
resulting undesirable runway profile constructed on a manmade
"ridge".
Alternative B
Figure 4-4 illustrates Alternative B. This concept also
provides a single 3300 feet paved runway oriented in a 16-34
direction. The proposed runway is shifted approximately 550
feet to the north of the existing threshold and rotated one
degree. The rotation eliminates a restaurant from the south
clear zone and also eliminates two residential parcels east of
Limonite Street from the north clear zone.
The northward shift of the runway, however, does necessitate the
relocation of CSAH 116 and impacts up to seven additional
residences to the north. The relocation of CSAH 116 as proposed
would intersect County Road 56 at 149th Avenue Northwest. The
westward extension of CSAH 116 would then follow along the
originally planned alignment approximately one quarter mile
north of the currently planned alignment. Excavation quantities
could be fairly well balanced since soils are predominantly sand
and sandy gravel.
Approach clearances over the railroad to the south and relocated
CSAH 116 to the north meet or exceed Federal Aviation Regulations
Part 77 criteria.
Alternative C
The development concept for Alternative C (Figure 4-5) was based
on ultimately mitigating the impacts to residential development
north of the airport, avoiding relocation of CSAH 116 while
providing adequate approach clearances, and providing greater
wind coverage.
4-4
