(2341M) (a) Test procedures are on file in the Department of Transportation Materials Engineering Laboratory in St. Paul. (b) To the extent permitted by these specifications, the Depactment intends to design the mixture with 4 percent air voids. (3) Asphalt cement content, as determined by the trial mix test procedures and above criteria, shall not exceed 6.8 percent nor be less than 5.5 percent by total weight of mixture. In the event that 100 percent taconite tailings are supplied the maximum asphalt content permitted shall be 7.5 percent and the maximum air void limit will not apply. (4) The Contractor may elect to use a mixtuce resulting in an asphalt content that exceeds the maximum limit; but, the Contract Agency will deduct the excess design asphalt from the pay quantity for bituminous material for mixture based on the difference between the maximum limit and the higher job-mix asphalt content. The difference will be deducted in all cases, even if the daily average of the bituminous material incorporated into the mixture is below the maximum limit established (as determined by tank stickings, meter readings or observation of batch weights). The normal 0.3 percentage point asphalt content tolecance shall be applied to the amount designated by the Engineer. (5) The requirements for mixture proportions shall be in accordance with 2331.3E; except that, the Job-Mix Formula (J.M.F.) percentages and permissible working range will be established based on the composite aggregate gradation of the approved trial mix ~ sample. The working range will be determined by applying plus and minus tolerances to the J.M.F, in accordance with the following: Sieve Size Tolerance 8 3/8 inch + 7 No. 4 + 7 No. 10 + 7 No. 40 + 6 No. 200 + 3 -4-
