aviation activities. In response to the Metropolitan Airport Planning Act, the .
Metropolitan Council is to identify an airport search azea for a new commercial
service airport by 1992 and MAC is to determine the site for a new major
replacement airport by 1994. 'The location of this facility will affect the development
and operation of the reliever airports.
Development of a new air carrier airport to serve the Minneapolis-St. Paui
area is estimated to take 10 to 15 years. In the meantime, as demand at
Minneapolis-St. Paul International wntinues to approach 100 percent of its capacity,
sups must be taken to enhance the reliever system's operating capacity. In concert
with the plans being studied to extend the operational life of Minneapolis-St. Paul
International, a sound and efficient reliever airport system is important. By providing
attractive general aviation facilities in the region, the reliever concept can help to
improve the demand/capacity relationship at Minneapolis-St. Paul International
through demand management. The Regional System Reliever Airports Study is an
important step in ensuring that adequate aviation facilities aze in place to meet the
long-term aviation needs of the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.
•
-8-
