<br />Three other groups represented smaller percentages of total employment. <br />Construction represented only 4 percent of jobs regionwide, but twice that percentage in <br />Scott County. Most azeas had relatively small percentages of their jobs in <br />transportation/communications and public utilities; the metropolitan azea's percentage was <br />5 percent. Finance, insurance, and real estate accounted for 7.6 percent of employment <br />regionwide, less than 3 percent in Anoka and Scott counties, and more than 11 percent in <br />Minneapolis. Government (12 percent in the Metropolitan area) was 17 percent of the <br />total in Carver County and St. Paul <br />The population of the Twin Cities metropolitan region (including Anoka, Carver, <br />Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties) grew from 1,985,873 in 1980 <br />to 2,205,492 in 1988, representing an 11 percent increase. The development of major <br />corridors in the region occurred to the west, along the interstate highway system, and near <br />Lake Minnetonka, although new development occurs on a smaller scale throughout the <br />region. Table I-1 shows a comparison of historical and projected data for employment and <br />population in the Twin Cities area. <br />2. EXISTING AIRPORT SYSTEM <br />The study azea's misting airport system consists of Minneapolis-St. Paul International, <br />its seven designated reliever airports, and 14 other general aviation airports. The reliever <br />airports in the metropolitan area are intended to reduce congestion at Minneapolis-St. Paul <br />International by providing general aviation pilots with alternative landing and training azeas <br />and quality facilities. The system airports are described in the following sections. <br />(1) Minnegpolis-St. Paul International Airport <br />An international hub and one of the busiest public-use airports in the United <br />States, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport covers more than 3,000 acres. <br />Maw azeas on the airport are currently being updated and improved by the MAC. <br />I-7 <br />
