2. Airport Search Area "A"
The other potential site for an airport in the metropolitan area is a
general azea located in the northwestern portion of Hennepin County (this
is a minor airport seazch area). Airport Seazch Area "A" has been proposed
for these reasons:
Crystal Airport anti Flying Cloud Airport have filled hangars
and limited potential for expansion.
Search Area "A" has ample ground access with good access to
suburban areas.
There is land available in the seazch azea.
The site is compatible with airspace needs.
The Metropolitan Council's Development Guide/Policy Plan discusses
plan objectives and their order of priority:
"All factors considered-safety, capacity, needs, economics, cost and
• consistency with other plans-the best alternative systems deemed
capable of meeting the plan objectives aze, in order of priority:
Develop new airport in Hennepin County (Seazch Area
"A")
Replace Crystal with new airport in Seazch Area "A".
Implement planned development of all existing airports.
"The most practical option for meeting the aeronautical needs of the
region is to continue to plan development of a new general aviation
airport in the western section of the region. In the long term, such a
facility, onoe operational, might eventually replace the existing Crystal
Airport."
Search Area "A" and Catver County aze the only two azeas currently
being actively considered for a new general aviation airport. In the past,
however, another site was briefly considered. Hastings, located to the
southeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul, was tttrned down because local support
for funding was not generated and there were difficulties finding a site.

I-26
