2. Airport Search Area "A" <br />The other potential site for an airport in the metropolitan area is a <br />general azea located in the northwestern portion of Hennepin County (this <br />is a minor airport seazch area). Airport Seazch Area "A" has been proposed <br />for these reasons: <br />Crystal Airport anti Flying Cloud Airport have filled hangars <br />and limited potential for expansion. <br />Search Area "A" has ample ground access with good access to <br />suburban areas. <br />There is land available in the seazch azea. <br />The site is compatible with airspace needs. <br />The Metropolitan Council's Development Guide/Policy Plan discusses <br />plan objectives and their order of priority: <br />"All factors considered-safety, capacity, needs, economics, cost and <br />• consistency with other plans-the best alternative systems deemed <br />capable of meeting the plan objectives aze, in order of priority: <br />Develop new airport in Hennepin County (Seazch Area <br />"A") <br />Replace Crystal with new airport in Seazch Area "A". <br />Implement planned development of all existing airports. <br />"The most practical option for meeting the aeronautical needs of the <br />region is to continue to plan development of a new general aviation <br />airport in the western section of the region. In the long term, such a <br />facility, onoe operational, might eventually replace the existing Crystal <br />Airport." <br />Search Area "A" and Catver County aze the only two azeas currently <br />being actively considered for a new general aviation airport. In the past, <br />however, another site was briefly considered. Hastings, located to the <br />southeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul, was tttrned down because local support <br />for funding was not generated and there were difficulties finding a site. <br /> <br />I-26 <br />
