Minor - Serve primarily the nation, region, and state; personal, <br />business, and instructional uses aze accommodated. <br />Special Purpose - Are primarily state and metropolitan in scope; personal <br />business, military, and instructional uses are <br />accommodated.' <br />Table I-2 presents the FAA classification system and compazes it with the Metropolitan <br />Council system. <br />In addition to the regional and federal classification systems, the FAA's National <br />Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) classifies airports by the type of service they <br />provide: <br />PR - Commercial Service -Primary <br />CM - Commerciat Service -Other <br />• CR - Reliever Airport with Commercial Service <br />RL - Reliever Airport <br />GA - General Aviation Airport <br />The NPIAS presents airport development data for public-use airports in the United States <br />and identifies federal funding eligibility levels for these airports. <br />Each of the airport classification systems had a unique role in the Regional System <br />Reliever Airports Study. The Metropolitan Council classifications relate to the policies <br />established for the region, while the federal system was utilized for FAA technical standazds. <br />Finally, the NPlAS classifications were used in the implementation phase of this study, <br />particularly as funding issues arose. <br />• <br />` Metropolitan Council, 1986, Aviation Development Guide/Policy Plan. <br />I-34 <br />
