6/24/75 AC 150/5300-4B
CHAPTER 5. OBSTACLE REMOVAL AND LAND CONSIDERATION
16. OBSTACLE REMOVAL.
a. The airport should be kept clear of all obstructions and,
as far as practical, all existing obstructions removed. FAR
Part 77, Objects Affecting Navigable Airspace, establishes
standards for determining obstructions in navigable airspace.
b. At utility airports where removal of existing obstructions is
not practicable, the following obstacle clearance is an acceptable
minimum:
(1) A11 objects except for frangible -mounted air navigational aids
which, because of their function, must be located near the
runway should be cleared to ground level within the area
125 feet laterally either side of the runway centerline and
extending 200 feet beyond the runway ends.
(2) In no case should objects penetrate a surface that
starts at the runway threshold and at the elevation of the
runway centerline at the threshold and slopes upward from the
runway at a slope of 20(horizontal) to 1(vertical). In the
plan view, the centerline of this surface coincides with the
runway centerline (extended). This surface extends laterally
125 feet on each side of the centerline at the runway threshold
and increases uniformly to 350 feet on each side of the center-
line at a point 2,250 feet from start; thereafte ,it extends
laterally 350 feet on each side of the centerline for a
distance of 2,750 feet. For new runways, it is recommended
that this surface start 200 feet out from the runway end as
shown in Figure 5-1.
(3)
Chap 5
Par 16
Desired operational clearances for terminal navigational
facilities should be provided and maintained. Advisory
Circular 150/5300-2, Airport Design Standards - Site
Requirements for Terminal Navigational Facilities, describes
in general terms the land area, grading requirementsyand
operational clearances desired for air navigational aids
(NAVAID) and air traffic control (ATC) facilities.
(4) Serious consideration should be given to removal of the
controlling obstacle(s) relative to existing and/or planned
terminal instrument procedures. In establishing instrument
procedures, the FAA Terminal Instrument Procedure Specialist.
makes the determination of the controlling obstacle.
Page 15
