Metropolitan area, but will occur nationwide. Only unprecedented in -migration to
the Twin Cities could maintain historic growth levels. 1/
The shift in character of the Twin Cities population will be reflected in the
composition of the future work force. Those people in the prime working ages of
20 to 60 will continue to increase in each decade from now until 2010. The
relationship between age and employment is depicted in Exhibit I-2. It shows the
percentage of people in each age group who are working or looking for work. This
is the labor force participation rate. It is shown separately for men and women
because of differences between the employment rates for each sex. The ratio of
full-time to part-time workers reflects preferences of workers of different ages and
economic forces. Given the major shifts in age composition ahead, this ratio bears
close watching.
Employment by county within the Twin Cities Metropolitan area is shown
below:
1987 COVERED EMPLOYMENT 2/
Emnlovment Growth
Percent Percent
County Number of Region 1980-1987 of Region
Anoka 68,523 5.7% 10,178 6.4%
Carver 12,436 1.0 2,582 1.6
Dakota 83,485 7.0 21,657 13.6
Suburban
Hennepin 413,074 34.4 85,454 53.7
Minneapolis 282,262 23.5 16,786 10.6
Suburban
Ramsey 106,290 8.9 9,575 6.0
St. Paul 179,865 15.0 328 0.2
Scott 16,548 1.4 3,520 2.2
Washington 36,791 3.1 9,082 5.7
Metropolitan
Area 1,199,274 100.0% 159,162 100.0%
1/ Metropolitan Council, '"The Aging of the Baby -Boom Generation in the Twin
Cities Metropolitan Area," February 1986.
2/ Metropolitan Council, "Employment trends in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area
1980-1987," March 1989.
I-3
