If additional runway length is required, the survey asked what <br />length is needed. The single -engine piston, multiengine piston, and <br />multienging turboprop operators answered 4,000 to 5,000 feet; the <br />majority o smess jet operators said somewhere between 5,000 and <br />7,000 feet.) Most of the respondents answered that no additional <br />yeliever was needed to supplement the system's geographic coverage. <br />f ihose that thought an additional reliever was needed indicated a <br />need to the North,land some in the West of the Minneapolis -St. Paul <br />area. <br />The last question addressed the issue of a new air carrier <br />airport in the area. It asked how this would impact trips to the <br />Twin Cities. Of the responses, 36 percent said they would use a <br />new major airport, while 30 percent said they would use a reliever. <br />Those that answered they would use a reliever were asked which <br />one they preferred. Downtown St. Paul received the largest <br />percentage of responses and Flying Cloud the next. <br />Overall, the survey indicated that the transient pilots use MSP <br />an average of less than 10 operations a year. Most transient pilots <br />use MSP mainly because their passengers required it. <br />The annual operations reported by transient pilots responding <br />to the survey, represent approximately 6 percent of total transient - <br />related activity. Of those transient responding, almost half <br />indicated that their operations could be transferred from MSP to one <br />of the reliever airports, providing that adequate facilities were <br />available at the reliever airports. (If this sample response is <br />expanded to the entire population of transient operations, this would <br />indicate that it may be possible to reduce transient general aviation <br />activity at MSP by roughly 18,000 annual operations.) <br />Registered Aircraft Owners Survey <br />The majority of respondents to this survey based an aircraft <br />inside the seven -county region. The largest percentage of these <br />aircraft are based at an airport other than MSP or one of the seven <br />designated relievers. Of those responding to the survey, 18.3 <br />percent, based an aircraft at Flying Cloud; 16.7 percent were based <br />at Anoka. These were the highest percentages reported for the <br />reliever airports. <br />The next question asked why they based their aircraft where <br />they did. The overwhelming response was convenience to home or <br />office. A similar response to the next question indicated registrants <br />have no desire to relocate in the near future. <br />The respondents were asked what could trigger a relocation. <br />The two answers that received the greatest response were closure of <br />the airport or a more convenient airport. Of those who were <br />willing to move to another airport, most chose the next closest <br />airport to their existing based airport. <br />I-17 <br />
