They have been seeded to rye to prevent
erosion until permanent seeding this Fall.
Surface is very well graded, but I fear there will be blowouts due to
sandy soil with a very minimal coating of topsoil.
Two high lines will have to be removed before licensing; one across
the SSE approach and the other a low -power service line across the west
approach. Representatives of the Anoka REA were out and we discussed
the amount of line to be buried. They have agreed to bury both lines,
and will send us a copy of their engineering, order.
No buildings have been started. An old dilapidated farm house is part
of the property, and will be renovated as a temporary office -lounge
and residence of a caretaker. It has sanitary facilities.
Gasoline tanks are to be buried shortly.
Tiedowns are not yet installed.
Most of the markers are on the site, but a few more are to be made.
They are 50-gallon drums, split longitudinally and welded end to end.
They are painted standard colors.
With the removal of the two high lines, painting of several low poles
in the SE approach, provision of windsock, telephone, and tiedowns, I
believe this airport will meet our minimum safety standards, with two
exceptions, as follows.
1. The E/W strip, after subtracting road clearance, will be only 2275'.
(Additional land, at the east, is to be purchased, but is not now owned
by the corporation.) This strip should be considered "auxiliary" only.
2. A small plot of wooded land, an ancient cemetery, is owned by
Ramsey Township, and the nearest boundary is 75' east of the NNW/SSE
strip (near edge). The trees in the nearest edge are some 30 feet high,
with higher trees in the more distant part. It is anticipated that the
Township will move the nine remains to another cemetery and make this
plot available for other uses, including cutting the trees. This does
not seem to impose any undue hazard to VFR operation, and I recommend a
waiver of the lateral clearance requirement.
Mr. Don Greenberg, Secretary of the corporation, will request the loan of
one of the state-owned windsock standards, to be installed on high ground,
not less than 150' east of the NNW/ESE strip and not less than 150' south
of the E/W strip.
